Residents at the home exercise choice and control over their daily life and in order to ensure choice and flexibility each resident’s care plan has been devised to take into consideration their own cultural and social requirements as well as their leisure abilities and interests.
Residents’ views are sought on what type of entertainment and outings they wish to have available and the activities programme is built on their preferences. Some residents prefer to spend time in their own room, it is their choice.
Here at Kettlewell House we have our own activities coordinator who organizes an active programme of crafts, games and hobbies, as well as regular events, social activities and excursions. Our aim is to provide an individual programme for every resident that is meaningful for them. Our activities programme focuses on the sensory needs which offer stimulation particularly for residents with dementia type illnesses. Kettlewell House has a sensory garden which offers many scents, a variety of colours and multiple textures. Residents enjoy gardening where they can plant flowers in a raised bed. Sensory stimulation is also available in a variety of therapies including aromatherapy, reflexology and hairdressing.
Physically stimulating activities are also regarded as important and our programme includes exercises and games such as skittles. Craft sessions, dominoes and card games are just some of the activities on offer. Residents greatly enjoy listening to their favourite books on CDs provided by the mobile library which visits frequently and Kettlewell House subscribes to the talking newspaper. The home has a family atmosphere which is encouraged by communal activities including reminiscence sessions, singalong’s and quizzes which are enjoyed by many. Special occasions such as religious celebrations and birthdays are celebrated in the home.
